Sofia Bears – humour, satire and fun
A humorous look inside the Sofia Bears locker room: the jokes, the banter and the team's nicknames, as told by Todor Stamenov.
In the lines below I won't be picking apart the subject of hemp, as a Bulgarian rapper once sang; instead I'll try to convey what it feels like to be part of the Sofia Bears – the feeling most players get before, during and after practice.
I'll try to explain the most common jokes, games and pranks in the locker room. I start this “objective” and merciless article with the Sofia Bears quarterback, Christian Tuan Chan. For four years now his teammates have joked that his main job is to toss the ball around. The young quarterback's main nickname is Chanev.
The next figure in today's look inside the team's kitchen is Atanas Atanasov, better known as the unemployed writer. With the look of a shop-window mannequin, Atanasko, as his teammates call him, has over the years become the team's all-purpose fighter, since there is no position Nasko hasn't played.
Next, dear reader, let me introduce Plamen Partinov – Gimli (if you don't know who Gimli is, watch The Lord of the Rings). Just like the hero of the trilogy, Patseto takes constant stick from his teammates for his short stature, but on the field and in practice he proves to be a huge fighting spirit locked in a small, metal-loving body.
Botora and Gipsa – sadly I don't know their real names; all I know is that they are Lokomotiv Sofia fans, which by itself tells you how their teammates treat them.
I finish by listing a few nicknames of Sofia Bears people, so that you, dear reader, are prepared when you come to one of our games:
The Giraffe – a 1.50 m former weightlifter from Pleven. The Rapper Dentist – the best dentist among singers and the best singer among dentists (but not Kotseto Kalki). Grandpa Smurf, Totally Softie, Zobcho (or the Pill), the Tinsmith, Burger, Evreyna, Little Spas, Vasko (whose name is Nasko), Razhdichkata and Kofeto.
THE END!
