Flag football joins the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic programme
The International Olympic Committee has added flag football to the five new sports for the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.
Great news for American football: flag football will be part of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
The IOC Executive Board approved five sports proposed by the organisers especially for LA 2028: cricket, flag football, lacrosse, squash and baseball/softball. The decision was announced by IOC President Thomas Bach.
Flag football is a non-contact version of American football. It is played with fewer players (usually 5 against 5) on a smaller field, and contact between players is not allowed. That makes it safe and open to all ages.
In Bulgaria the first official 5-a-side flag football championship, in several age groups, is expected in 2024. The Sofia Bears already coach children in flag football – maybe the Olympians of the future are among them!
